Project Challenges

  • Limited ability to scout locations in advance, requiring on-the-spot adjustments.
  • Unpredictable shooting environments in rural areas and learning centers.
  • Need to build trust quickly with students to capture genuine, sensitive interviews.
  • Balancing minimal gear with the need for high-quality footage and reliable audio.

Work Process

Story Discovery

Because the locations and conditions were unknown before filming, the approach needed to stay flexible. Interview questions were planned to guide the narrative, but space was intentionally left for spontaneous moments and authentic experiences. Traveling with the UNESCO team allowed us to discuss the story flow in real time, shaping the direction organically as we met the students and learned more about their lives.

On-Location Filming

The project was filmed on a Canon C200 paired with Zeiss prime lenses to handle low-light environments and capture clean, intimate visuals. Most of the footage was recorded at 24 fps to keep a grounded, real-life feel, with slow-motion used sparingly for emotional emphasis. Since the environment varied from classroom settings to village surroundings, the filming required constant adaptation while keeping the students comfortable and at ease on camera.

Sound & Visual Intent

Audio played a central role in conveying reality and presence, so extra care was taken to capture clean voices and natural ambience. Visually, the film includes moments of characters looking outward — subtle, reflective shots that represent their hopes for a brighter future made possible through education. The overall style remained honest and unobtrusive, supporting the documentary’s focus on personal stories and educational opportunity.
