Project Challenges

  • Remaining present without interrupting real moments, and letting images and sound carry meaning without overt explanation
  • Working within unpredictable environments while maintaining visual consistency
  • Balancing sensitivity with clarity when portraying educational inequality

Work Process

Intent & Direction

The project began with conversations around how educational inequality is usually portrayed, and what often goes unseen. We agreed early on that the film should move beyond information — allowing audiences, especially those in the city, to see and feel the everyday reality of limited access to education. To create emotional grounding, the story was shaped around a single, relatable character. A small casting process, guided by the program’s teachers through photos and short interviews, helped identify the right perspective to follow.

Production

Filming took place over three days across multiple schools in Northern Thailand, traveling between provinces in a shared van with the team. This closeness allowed the camera to move fluidly alongside the subject, following her into daily routines and environments without interruption. The film was shot in RAW on the Canon C200 using prime lenses, maintaining a cinematic, filmic image while working within a run-and-gun documentary schedule. The approach remained light and unobtrusive, prioritizing real moments, natural light, and genuine interaction.

Assembly

The film was shaped around mood and continuity rather than pace. Moments are held, transitions are minimal, and ambient sound is used to add feeling and texture, allowing scenes to linger naturally. The edit supports a quiet, filmic flow, giving the audience space to absorb both the environment and the emotion beneath it.
